Results of State Planners Survey

 

This fall, the National Collaborative of State Planners, a project of the Regional and Intergovernmental Planning Division, was launched. Previously, no concrete place existed within the APA for State Level Planners in all fifty states to share ideas - and the National Collaborative aims to serve that need. In order to best tailor the structure of the National Collaborative, the fall launch was kicked off with a survey to almost 350 state planners across the United States. A surprisingly high response rate provided a wealth of meaningful feedback that validates the idea that state planners are indeed searching for a space for collaboration.

 

According to the survey, important issues facing state planners today include climate change, the need for outreach regarding the benefits of statewide planning, and the integration of economic development with planning.  Survey results showed that state planners consistently prefer an online platform to share best practices, seek and provide feedback, and connect with one another. Additionally, state planners see the most value in an online newsletter and periodic webinars that address state-level planning issues. With the Collaborative website up and running, best practices submitted from across the country will be added and other features are being explored.  Additionally, the Collaborative will be hosting its first webinar this winter and will host a Facilitated Discussion at the National Conference in Atlanta. This is an exciting time for this new Division initiative, and all state-level planners are encouraged to get involved and add their voice to the collaboration. Division Mourns Passing of Colleague Ron Kirby

http://d3trabu2dfbdfb.cloudfront.net/2/5/2511107_150x150.jpegMembers of the Executive Board of the APA Regional and Intergovernmental Planning Division were deeply saddened by the tragic news of Dr. Ron Kirby's death last month.  Dr. Kirby, one of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments leading experts on transportation planning, was a key figure in in regional planning and guided the work of the Transportation Planning Board for more than 26 years. His deep knowledge and wise counsel assisted local, state and national officials in reaching consensus on the major transportation issues over the years.  He was also a dear friend to many members of the Board and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family at this difficult time. 

 

In lieu of cards and flowers, the family asks that you send donations to Americans For Responsible Solutions (www.AmericansforResponsibleSolutions.org) and/or Inter-Country Adoption Board (www.icab.gov.ph) for victims of Typhoon Yolanda.




Division Survey Coming Soon

Hello members!  As a regular part of the Board's annual planning and development of our work plan we need your input.  We are looking to enhance member services next year through social media and webinars and we would like to better know what your interests are.  Finally, we have many initiatives where we could use your help and contributions so we'll be seeking your feedback on Division involvement.  Our Division survey will be launched later this month so please look for it in your inbox.  If you have any questions or would like to help out please contact Peter G. RIPD and Latinos & Planning Division Co-Sponsor Second Webinar on Cross-border Regional Planning

On October 29, 2013 the APA Latinos & Planning Division and Regional and Intergovernmental Planning Division hosted the second in a series of webinars on best practices in cross-border regional planning along the U.S. / Mexico border.  An initiative of the Latinos and Planning Division called dialogos, this event was held on April 19-20, 2013 in Brownsville, a border city in Texas, and the second dialogo held this state. The dialogo was organized and facilitated by the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University. Through real examples discussed during the dialogo, the experiences of the City of Brownsville, the City of Harlingen, the Community Development Corporation of Brownsville, and the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College were shared with participants. Their experiences and the process of collaboration among these stakeholders gave lessons to planners on how to engage in creative and successful projects to improve living conditions in this border region.

The moderator for this webinar was Monica Villalobos, Chair of the Latinos and Planning Division, and the speakers were:

  • Cecilia Giusti, Ph.D. - Associate Dean, College of Architecture, Texas A&M University
  • Edelmiro Escamilla, Ph.D. - Assistant Professor, College of Architecture, Texas A&M University
  • James Rojas - Urban Planner, Community Activist, Founder of Latino Urban Forum

The webinar presented lessons learned in the community engagement effort resulting from the dialogo in a border area: demographic realities, perceptions about poverty and isolation in border towns, and economic and development strategies in the planning of border areas.  The speakers shared "lessons learned" and discussed emerging issues and techniques that are now being used through collaborative planning efforts.

As with the first webinar, the Divisions worked with APA National Office staff to produce and market this webinar and receive AICP Certification Maintenance credits.  We were also able to produce a video recording of the second webinar, and we are now working with APA staff to determine the best ways to make the recorded webinar available to those who were not able to participate in the live webinar.

Our two divisions are now putting together a report to the APA Divisions Council regarding "lessons learned" from our first two webinars, and we will be sharing the report with our Division boards and members over the next couple of months.  Our two divisions are also starting to plan our third joint webinar, which will focus on cross-border economic development planning.  Stay tuned!

The proposed APA Division bylaws for FY13 have been posted to the Documents page 


The APA RIPD FY 2013 budget that was unanimously approved by the Executive Board on November 20, 2012 has been posted to the Documents page.
 
Included in next year’s work plan is funding to improve the Division’s website, proposed grants for regional planning educational efforts, and contribution to a proposed PAS report on best practices in regional planning.
